This Debate Club meets weekly for group debates on topics chosen by the students. We vote on topics during class, so there's nothing to prepare ahead of time, and both experienced and beginner debaters are welcome! Students will practice debate individually, in pairs, and on teams (using Zoom's "breakout room" function). The teacher will moderate the debate practice to ensure everyone gets speaking time and that the debates are organized and respectful. Students will help select topics, which may include questions like: -Is cloning justified? -How is social media effecting society for better or for worse? -Is the death penalty justified? Since this is an Ongoing/subscription-based class, we'll meet at the same day/time every week. Come whenever you like and only pay for classes you attend. Finally, I recommend checking out my Teacher Profile, especially my Teaching Philosophy section, to make sure this is a fit for your student. I also offer this as a Self-Paced Class, if your student prefers that method of instruction: https://outschool.com/classes/intro-to-the-art-of-debate-x1ly2Z6X#usu529M6QA This class is also perfect for Saysa (Scholastic Asia Young Storytellers Award) participants. Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Education from University College London
Bachelor's Degree from Georgetown University
I teach Debate on Outschool as a 4 week Live Class and as a Flex Class and have received requests to make a Weekly Debate Club. My business degree includes courses on public speaking and I've served on international business case competition teams, which have a similar format to a debate.
It's crucial in today's world, filled with misinformation and arguments on social media, that young people know how to logically express themselves and engage with others.
