Mr. Val is an avid chess player and cohost of a YouTube Channel dedicated to chess. He holds a Masters in Educational Psychology and a Bachelor's in English & Communications. He won the 2021 Philadelphia World Open U1800 and the 2021 Las Vegas National Open U1700. His blitz ranking is 2113. He has been teaching chess to children and adults for over 10 years. Mr. Nate grew up competing in local, state, and national chess tournaments. He has won about 50 trophies. In high school, he taught at after school chess clubs at multiple elementary schools. He has been tutoring young and tutored young chess players both online and in person for over 10 years. His current chess ranking is 1800. He remembers chess being an important part of his childhood and looks forward to helping learners discover the joys of playing chess both recreationally and competitively.
Chess games must be played on a laptop or a computer. If your child has access to 2 devices they can enter the Outschool Zoom room via a tablet or smartphone, then use a laptop or computer for the digital chessboard. If your kid already has an online Chess account please keep it for your personal use. It is easier for the students to play each other if they use an account create by our teacher.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Chess.org will be used for students to play games against the computer in addition to playing against their peers in class. An account is not required to use this tool. As an account is not required student personal identifying information is not stored in the online tool. Students wishing to keep track of their score and game history are only able to do so using ChessKid.com outside of our classroom and class time. We do not require students to have a Chess.org or ChessKid.com account. Parents with questions on how to help their child practice outside of class instruction time may look at these online tools for personal use.
