Class experience
US Grade 8 - 11
In this ongoing book club that meets once a week, learners will have the opportunity to read classic, popular fantasy books! Students will read independently and then we will meet each week to discuss several chapters of the novel. In these discussions, students will have the chance to examine in depth the story's events, characters, themes, exciting moments, and whatever else might have captured their interest! Discussion will be largely student-led, but I will have discussion questions...
Students will develop and improve their reading comprehension and literary analysis skills by reading novels in a genre they find fun and engaging. Students will learn how to express their enjoyment, understanding, and opinions about a story to others in a guided, constructive, and respectful manner. Students will gain a deeper understanding of fantasy as a genre, its tropes, archetypes, and some of its most famous stories, worlds, and characters.
Homework Offered
Students will read independently every week as a part of this book club. In books that are easier to read, typically 6-8 chapters will be assigned every week, meaning students can follow along with a steady ~1 chapter per day. More challenging books (or just books that happen to have long chapters), we will read at approximately half that pace, 3-4 chapters per week, half a chapter each day.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

(You do not need to purchase any books until we have selected which book we will be reading next!) The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien Inkheart by Cornelia Funke Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Fantasy books tend to involve adventure, danger, magic, and scary situations for the characters to encounter and overcome. This is also the more advanced version of the class aimed at older students and this is reflected in the content of the novels we will be reading. At the end of the day, all the books selected are ultimately positive in their tone and the characters overcome their trials, but at the this older level, some of the trials are more intense. They all include degrees of violence and genuine injustice. Some include horror, language (though not gratuitous), references to assault and abuse, and more involved romantic relationships (sexuality occasionally referenced but not shown). I can provide a more detailed list of darker or mature content for each individual book upon request.
