We Will Learn to Cut and Paste Kids! Commas Save Lives.
Commas cause more writing mistakes than any other punctuation mark, and yet, with the application of a few rules anyone can master the comma.
What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will learn how to use commas with coordinating conjunctions, dependent clauses, appositives, coordinating adjectives, introductory phrases and words, parenthetical expressions, a series (including Oxford comma), dates, addresses, numbers, and nonrestrictive clauses. Just as importantly, students will learn when not to use commas. To be successful in this class, students should have a sound understanding of the parts of speech and the parts of a sentence. The class will consist of a mixture of online discussion about commas with visual examples, which will be followed by an opportunity for students to demonstrate understanding or ask questions. The class will have a light-hearted tone as many of the demonstration sentences will feature comma mistakes that result in an unintended humorous meaning. Students will then demonstrate their mastery of comma usage by completing an assessment that has been uploaded. Students will have two days after the class to submit their completed assessment, which I will grade and return within 24 hours. The format of the assessment will be similar to that which is found in standardized tests such as the ACT. This will afford students the opportunity to become comfortable demonstrating their knowledge in such a format.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As an English teacher, school principal, and freelance proofreader and copy editor, I have seen too many times how a writer's misunderstanding of standard comma usage has ruined the hard work put into a manuscript, paper, blog, or email. I have developed a method of teaching comma usage that is simple to understand and many students have found helpful.
