- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? - The Giving Tree - The Lorax - Strega Nona - Where the Wild Things Are - A Light in the Attic What do these books (and thousands more like them) have in common? They've all been banned at one time or another. I don't know about you, but that just makes me want to read them even more! Let's get our rebellion on and read together, laugh together, discuss together, and maybe learn a little something along the way. We will not be limited to just the books listed here. Each class will be a little different based on the direction the students in each section want to head. There's no better way to learn than to be excited about the topic, so I encourage everyone to bring their own banned books to class, too. No previous knowledge is required. No homework will be given. After class trips to the library to find more banned books are absolutely encouraged. Meaningful participation is encouraged, though no one will be put on the spot to answer or contribute.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Reasons for the banning of these books will be discussed, so sex, LGBTQIA+, profanity, etc. may be named. Questions on the more sensitive topics will be referred back to parents to deal with in whatever way you see fit, but know that they may come up in conversation, in videos, on lists, etc. in factual, non-judgmental ways.
Supply List
Any and all necessary materials will be provided in class. If you have copies of banned books that you'd like to share that week, please feel free to bring them. If you want to check out the books from the library, feel encouraged to do so.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
