We Need Diverse Graphic Novels - Book Club Vol. 1 (7-10 Yr Olds)
Class experience
--Updated for Winter 2022-- What do you call a kid who reads graphic novels? A reader! Young people are forming lots of opinions about themselves and the people around them. Their natural curiosity about differences in appearance and cultural backgrounds begins to come into play during this age. They are developmentally able to put cultural and racial differences into perspective. They can either learn to appreciate - or devalue - traits that make others different from themselves. This book...
Students will see themselves in these stories and will be able to explore their own identities as well as learning about others. This course will bring visibility to cultures that may be different than their own. They will build community, unity, and inclusivity. Reading diverse books will create an opening for discussions about what's happening in our current events, what has happened in the past, and how we have grown as a society. We will also take notice that even with different backgrounds, kids are kids, and they will be able to find similarities.
I have taught diversity for many years and to many people, not just kids. I have taught and continue to teach the compassion of diversity to kids daily. I have been teaching on Outschool since June 2020. In many of my classes we have covered the topics of women's rights, race, gender, ethnic background, and much more that falls under the diversity umbrella.
Students will need to have a physical or digital copy of the books to participate in the class discussions. Most of these books should be attainable through your local library. Please plan ahead when joining this club. We do not read the books in class.
During this class, there may be discussions covering (but not limited to) LGBTQIA+, Native American people, gender diversity, people of color, people with disabilities, and ethnic and cultural minorities. All conversations will be at an age-appropriate level. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
If you have Disney+ please watch SparkShorts "Out" and "Loop". We will be discussing these in our first class as well.
Looking back on my early years of learning, what stands out most in my memories are the subjects I found joy in, the teachers who made learning a delightful experience, and the freedom to explore topics that fascinated me. These are the very...
