Watercolor Painting: Paint Animals & Plants with Sumi-e Art Techniques! (FLEX)
What's included
Class Experience
Patience, Practice and enjoying the Process of creating each paint stroke is the goal of Sumi-e painters! Chinese Brush Painting is a beautiful art form that was developed in China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries in which painters try to capture the essence of nature while leaving space in their work for the imagination to wander. Learning Sumi-e painting helps artists build skills that transfer to all types of painting and visual art, and stresses the importance of growing as artists as we learn to slow down, be patient with ourselves and have fun with the process of learning! This is a Flexible Schedule class so there are no live meetings. The material will be posted weekly and you can view it and create your paintings during the week at your convenience. Each week for 4 weeks students will be guided through learning a variety of traditional Sumi-e brushstrokes and then use these brushstrokes to create a new painting with demonstration videos that I have pre-recorded, along with presentations and discussions about the history of Chinese brush painting and some aspects of Asian art and culture. My detailed and comprehensive video demonstrations range from 45 minutes to 70 minutes each week and allow students to work at their own pace. Students will also receive access to the PowerPoint presentations used in class. Students will upload their artwork each week as a photo or video in the Outschool classroom and are encouraged to give encouraging feedback each week to their classmates. I reply quickly to submissions with specific feedback and tips and am happy to offer extra individual assistance whenever needed. Sharing our ideas, tips, and artwork with others in the class will inspire us all to take our creativity to a new level! Each week, young artists will learn how to create a different painting of traditional subject matter: Week 1: Bamboo Week 2: Koi Fish Week 3: Orchids Week 4: Chinese Dragon The importance of patience and practice in Sumi-e painting will be stressed as we explore the different ways to hold and use the brush to create a variety of strokes with watercolor paint or ink. We will work step by step to learn all of the paint strokes needed for the subject and then combine them in our final artwork each week. Artists will be encouraged to add their own creative touches to their paintings! I focus on building skills, self-confidence, and personal artistic expression in all of my classes and students at all levels of artistic ability are welcome!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Georgia
Hello everyone! I am Katee Gebo and I'm passionate about teaching art! My number one priority is to nurture the personal creativity of my students and foster their love for art! I want every child to be confident in the knowledge that they are already wonderful artists and have amazing ideas to share through their art! (This is absoluteIy true - I am blown away and inspired by the ideas and creativity of my learners every day!)
I have been a certified art teacher for 19 years and have a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and a Master's degree in Art Education. I am also a working artist. My favorite media has always been oil paint, although I have really been enjoying exploring my work with ink and watercolors too!
I love to use art to foster children’s natural critical and creative thinking and communication skills. While creating art, we will also be learning about different artists, historical events, and different cultures. I believe that almost anything can be taught through art in a fun and engaging manner. I have loved seeing the knowledge, thoughtfulness, communication skills, artistic skills, and creativity of my students blossom during my art classes at Virtual da Vinci Online Art Academy, and now at Outschool!
As a teacher, I am much more concerned with the process, not the product. I often focus on abstract and non-objective art, (especially with younger students) and a variety of artists, so that children do not become overly concerned with imitating the representational art of adults and feel discouraged if their work is not realistic. I work on skills for realism as well, but I focus on learning how to observe carefully what you really see rather than a "how to draw" or "directed drawing" approach so that children gain the skills and confidence they need to create their own unique art that is meaningful and personal to them.
My goal in teaching art is for children to learn to view themselves as creative artists with interesting ideas, develop skills and self-confidence in their abilities, learn how to express themselves visually, and to be persistent, make mistakes, take chances, and, most of all, have fun!!!
