Class Experience

Using a step by step approach, and a variety of techniques, students will learn how to create simple and dynamic paintings, how to use watercolor paint to its best advantage, and paint a variety of subjects.

I try to maintain a calm and engaging environment, emphasizing the process of creating art over the end result. I truly believe any one with an interest and willingness to learn can have a great time in this class, though some familiarity with watercolor is helpful. Class time can vary a little bit depending on the number of learners attending, and the complexity of the topic. Though I try to avoid it, sometimes class topics take two sessions (so two weeks) to finish up. I will always update the class listing to show if thats happening, with a “part 2” in the weekly topics section at the end of this description. Materials used will be a watercolor sketchbook or paper, drawing pencil, eraser, and watercolor paint in a variety of colors, and watercolor brushes, paper towel or rag to wipe brushes, and a cup of water.

After these dates, new topics will be added, and student requests can always be incorporated into the schedule at any time. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this class, if you are interested in a private class, or introduction to watercolor lesson for your learner.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!

My name is Abi. My passion and expertise are in drawing and watercolor painting, but I also dabble in and have taught the basics in a few other mediums, such as acrylic painting, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil.

I’ve been drawing and painting since very early childhood and have always embraced it as a part of who I am, and known it to be valuable resource in my life. A lot of my inspiration comes from the landscapes around me, or the feelings events, the weather, and books inspire in me. I believe that art is an outlet for both processing feelings or events through life, and is an underused tool to develop skills in observation and critical thinking. My teaching style is calm and centered in being a safe space and showing that the creative process can provide joy and peace. Mistakes happen, but its never the end of the world or something to be ashamed of. I'm dedicated to helping people better understand the world around them and to developing relationships to enrich life through art. I believe anyone who is interested and willing to try can become an artist.

I have been an art teacher for four years, and before that had six years of experience in support roles providing supervision and guidance to children within classroom and day-care settings.

In my free time I enjoy being outside, knitting, crocheting and am a big fiction reader. This year I hope to use my sketchbook practice to document my walks, bird sightings, and travels.
