Class Experience

In this course, we will continue to explore and build upon our watercolor painting skills. No prior experience is needed, as I will introduce a new technique each week. I will also encourage learners to create their own artistic style. I will be available to gently guide them as they become more confident and well rounded artists!

My teaching style is relaxed and encouraging. At the beginning of class, we will introduce ourselves and go over classroom expectations.

Class 1: we will go over the basics of watercolor and supplies, as well as create a simple pattern painting.

Class 2: we will explore and compare wet on dry painting versus wet on wet painting.

Class 3: we will explore blending colors, and using salt and various objects to create texture in our paintings.

Class 4: we will use washi tape to mask off areas in our paintings and add doodles to our work.

I will be adding more classes in the future and am also available for private lessons.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Virginia Mathys and I am an artist and art educator. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Texas at Arlington. I have been a certified K-12 art educator since 2006. I teach drawing, painting, bookbinding, crochet, collage, printmaking and art journaling.

I live, dream and breathe art. I love to create! I love to draw, paint, doodle, make messes, but my absolute favorites are crocheting & art journaling! After visiting a coral reef exhibit at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, I decided that I wanted to create a coral reef of my own! I filled a 55 gallon fish tank full of crocheted sea creatures, coral, and plants. I’ve also created thousands of tiny crocheted octopuses that are now all over the world.

I believe that art is about so much more than the end product. It’s about the experience! I use art as an expression of who I am and I here to help others do the same.
