Watercolor Around the World
Class Experience
This 8-week course invites students to use watercolor, pencil, and black markers to watercolor some of the world's most magical places! Each week, we will focus on a new location, learn a bit about the geography, culture, and natural environment before we jump into selecting an inspirational image from the place and painting a piece of art inspired by the location. This course pairs geography and art in a way that is sure to inspire students and support their understanding of the world.

Week 1Lesson 1Costa Rica & the Manuel Antonio Nature reserveLearn about the incredible biodiversity of this Central American country. Take a virtual tour of the rainforest, and then select a favorite image from Manuel Antonio park to watercolor.Week 2Lesson 2Tanzania & the Great Rift ValleyDiscover one of the most breathtaking natural places in the world - and the place where human kind is said to have started! Explore Tanzania, including Kiswahili language and the world of the Serengeti, then choose an image from the country to create a watercolor painting of.Week 3Lesson 3Vietnam & Halong BayIn Vietnams Halong Bay, beautiful limestone rocks jut from the water and create a unique and beautiful maze for boaters and other adventurers. Explore the country's many beautiful spaces, then select and image from Halong Bay to paint.Week 4Lesson 4USA (New York City) & the Statue of LibertyThe USA has many incredible spaces, but none as iconic as the Statue of Liberty in NYC. Explore the tiny (but mighty) island of Manhattan, then take on the challenge of blending the PERFECT green to paint the Statue of Liberty.Week 5Lesson 5Rome & the ColosseumWhen in Rome...paint something! We'll explore the ancient city, including it's renowned Colosseum - then we will choose from a variety of images to paint one of the iconic places in this beloved city.Week 6Lesson 6Canada & the Rocky MountainsThe beautiful Rocky Mountains are an iconic Canadian wonder. Explore Banff, Alberta, and other natural spaces while we learn about the entire Rocky Mountain range and select a landscape to paint.Week 7Lesson 7Turkey & CappadociaIn Cappadocia, "fairy houses" - or sandstone pillars - make up the tiny villages. Each morning, hundreds of hot air balloons light up the sunrise over the desert, creating a magical scene - one we will paint in this class.Week 8Lesson 8World Maps & WatercolorIn this class, we will explore the different world maps and a variety of ways artists portray the geography of the world. We will talk about upside down maps, geographical accurate maps, cartoon maps, and artistic maps. Then we will use our newfound knowledge of the world to paint our own world map.
- Students will use pencils, watercolors, and markers to paint an image inspired by a country
- Students will be familiar with 8 new countries and their locations, cultures, and natural environment.
