Class Experience

In this 4-week, hands-on course, we will experiment with watercolor and mixed media techniques to create watercolor animals. Each week, students will draw and paint a different animal. Animals of focus will be based on student requests. Students will interact with each other in daily feedback sessions. Learners are encouraged to use their imaginations and incorporate storytelling into their own works of art. We celebrate both naturalistic drawing approaches and whimsical drawing approaches.

Week 1: Skill Building and Color Mixing
Week 2-4: Animals drawn and painted using different skills and techniques and based off of learner requests.

Class Expectations
1. Be kind to one another
2. Wait your turn to speak, or raise your hand using the zoom function

5. Per Outschool safety policy, each learner must enable their camera and check in at least once during class to confirm their identity. If this is not done, the learner will have to be removed from the class session and can be readmitted to class once their identity has been verified. For more info on this safety, policy see: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/579976-learner-safety-and-privacy-for-parents
6. Please try to arrive on time for the class. If you are more than 15 minutes late, please watch the video of the class after the class has ended to catch up. The class will be locked 20 minutes after the class begins to minimize interruptions in instruction. I'm happy to chat with you if you have any questions about the class video.

Parental Guidance
Please see the materials list to make sure your learner is able to use these supplies. Learners are encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and also to use their mistakes to create new techniques. This is a growth-oriented class, and exploration through the process is the main goal. It's the journey that's important, not the destination. Students will learn lots of new techniques that they can add to their "artist toolbox." Once they have these techniques, they can use them to explore projects on their own.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been teaching grades K-12 for over a decade and have used this curriculum with a multitude of ages. This curriculum has been used and modified over the years so that it will set students up with the tools they need to be successful in creating their own works of art. In addition to teaching art, I am a professional painter and I use these same tools to create my art. My approach to teaching is hands-on, exploratory, and creative. I like to begin by demonstrating the basic skills, having students demonstrate the basic skills, and then allowing them to apply those skills to a creative project. I meet students where they're at and my goal is to grow their skills and their confidence so they feel empowered to tackle their own projects outside of class.

Learners are encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and also to use their mistakes to create new techniques. This is a growth-oriented class, and exploration through process is the main goal. It's the journey that's important, not the destination. Students will learn lots of new techniques that they can add to their "artist toolbox." Once they have these techniques, they can use them to explore projects on their own.
