Intermediate Level
Students will be drawing animals with pencils. This is a beginner-friendly to advanced drawing class. I show how to really draw the shapes and lines in the pictures we draw - with emphasis on proportion. The first half of class is spent drawing and identifying shadows and their values. The second half of class is all about watercolor techniques and applying the correct shading to create realistic form. Even though we are learning technical skills, I love to make it personal for each learner and encourage their insights and questions via messaging. Students will improve understanding and practice of using art pencils and watercolors and identifying light and shadow. There is a lot of emphasis on practicing proportion and value. Sometimes we will use a grid to aid with proportion. We will also do a value study at the beginning of the semester and as needed. Students will be encouraged to sign their name and share their artwork (but this is not required). Sharing artwork is encouraged each class so that feedback can be given and questions answered. Week 1: Cat Week 2: Raccoon Week 3: Crab on beach Week 4: Dragonfly Week 5: Fox Week 6: German Shepherd Week 7: Donkey Week 8: Bearded Dragon

Supply List
✏️ Pencil (any pencil will work but I recommend art pencils) ⓧ Eraser (any kind but I highly recommend a "kneaded eraser" if possible) 🎨 Watercolors (DO NOT use "dollar store" watercolors - but a $5-$10 set will work great!) 🖌 Brushes (Sable brushes work best but any brush that has bendy bristles will work - not the stiff plastic one in a "dollar" set) 📒 Watercolor Paper (any kind) 😜 Masking tape (optional - but it helps to tape down the watercolor paper so it doesn't warp when the water dries) 💈 Hairdryer (optional - but helps to dry the layers of paint and speed up the process) 🌈 Colored pencils (optional - students can add details at the end easily with colored pencils)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Brigham Young University Idaho
Hello! I am BriAnn Ongesel. I have taught online classes for over 7 years and over 2 years here on Outschool. I teach art classes to ages 5-17.
I have my bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from Brigham Young University Idaho. I also studied UX/UI design from California Institute of the Arts. I am currently a freelance designer, online teacher, and mother of four.
I believe that the best learning comes from doing. Students learn from practicing the principles taught and from sharing what they learn with their peers. It is important to have fun in my classes, as well as talking with other students about class concepts and similar interests. Learning is about chasing what excites you and diving into all you can with it.
My hobbies include reading, drawing, and baking. I love good food - including 'nicecream', butternut squash, and cheesecake.
