In this 2 week class, I will be teaching students about four major properties of water. This is a useful topic for students who may take or are currently taking Chemistry, Biology, Marine Science, or Physical Science. In week 1, I will teach them the main content and we will complete two of the four hands-on activities. In week 2, I will do a quick review and then we will complete the second set of activities. Students may follow along with my demonstrations, but I will be giving time in...
Students will be able to understand four major properties of water including cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, and capillary action. They will be able to make practical connections to how these properties impact various parts of our lives and life, in general.
I have taught Biology and Chemistry for a combined 16 years in a middle school and high school setting.
Materials for students who would like to complete the hands-on activities: Week 1- Cohesion Activity: 2 pennies, 2 glasses, water, dish soap, food coloring (optional) Capillary Action Activity: Toothpicks (2), paper towel, food coloring, water, rubbing alcohol, 2 small glasses or clear cups Week 2- Adhesion Activity: Napkins, 1 glass, water, and table salt Surface Tension Activity: At least 5 metal paper clips, dish soap, tweezers, 1 glass, and water
The learner is assessed through Nearpod learning checks throughout the class.
35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
All media content is hosted on You Tube, but they are all my videos. I will be using screen sharing and Nearpod to help engage students. Students will be asked to log into Nearpod.
It would be helpful if students knew what a chemical bond was before attending class.
