Class Experience

Over 12 sessions we will follow the lives of our monarch caterpillars as they grow then go through metamorphosis and become beautiful butterflies.

Each lesson students will be able to observe and document the real journey of our butterflies.

Students will have a printable workbook which we will work through over the 6 weeks.
We will keep a diary (through writing or drawing) of what is happening to our caterpillars/ butterflies each session and will focus on learning a different aspect about the monarch caterpillar/ butterfly each session.

I believe that education is a partnership between the learner and teacher and therefore sometimes the order of sessions may change to respond to interest from learners or unexpected happenings with the insects. For this reason the order of lessons may change. However here is a basic outline of what will be covered each session.

PART 1 - CATERPILLARS
Session 1: Meet the caterpillars and look at details of the monarch caterpillars
Session 2: What do our caterpillars need to survive and thrive? Using the Hungry Caterpillar story as a jumping point for discussion.
Session 3: What our caterpillars are needing continued and moulting
Session 4: What is metamorphosis and what other animals go though it?

PART 2 - CHRYSALIS
Session 5: Observing the Chrysalis and beginning our butterfly calender
Session 6: Continuing our butterfly calender - what big events do our butterflies have in their lives?
Session 7: What is happening inside the chrysalis?
Session 8: What is the difference between a chrysalis and a cacoon? and the difference between moths and butterflies

PART 3 - BUTTERFLY
Session 9: Emerging from the chrysalis
Session 10: Parts of a butterfly and what are they for?
Session 11: Butterfly food and eating
Session 12: Life Cycle and what's next?
