Let's bake a simple chocolate cake together! Once we are acquainted and have reviewed class expectations, we will have a short discussion about the history of this recipe and others like it. We will explore the challenges people faced when cooking during the depression. Then we will get cooking. If possible students can join class from their kitchens. Otherwise, they will need a clean workspace near their computer. An ingredient list and recipe will be sent a several days prior to class. Bakers will be putting cakes into hot ovens, and I welcome adult helpers to assist as needed.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to bake a simple chocolate cake to share with their families.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Erin Covey, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to get to know your kids. I have homeschooled my own wonderful kids since 2014. I will be teaching cooking, baking, nature study, and book clubs.
I am an avid lifelong learner, fortunate enough to have inherited this trait from my wonderful grandfather who, although he never attended college, could tell you anything you would ever want to know about the stars and the planets.
Because of my broad interests, I have had a variety of education and experiences. These include earning a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Washington, becoming a certified master food preserver and teaching soap making.
If I could meet anyone it would be Laura Ingalls Wilder. I am inspired by the simplicity and wisdom in her books, and I agree with her philosophy that it is the sweet, simple things in life that matter most. I enjoy canning, soap making, baking, gardening, and spending time in nature.
I seek to cultivate these values of simplicity, wisdom and a love of learning in my homeschool as well as here on Outschool.
