Class Experience

This writing and workshopping intensive is for teenage Warriors fans!

Erin Hunter's Warriors series provides great source material for young writers to create both fanfiction (stories using characters or other story elements form the Warriors series) and original works inspired the world of Warriors. From first draft to final draft, workshopping with other writers can improve the quality of your character development, narrative, tone, and authorial voice.

With support and feedback from fellow writers, share your original character, clans, and storylines. Each learner will have an opportunity to share part of their current story and hear constructive feedback from their peers and the instructor. We will discuss each story's strengths, areas where the author could expand or clarify the story to improve it, and what we most enjoyed about the work. Whether you're starting a new story, working on expanding and continuing a story, or workshopping a completed first draft, you will get a week of focused writing/editing time with peers.

Over the week, I will provide general feedback, as well as focusing on specific topics (such as writing dialogue or fight scenes) that are beneficial to the class as a whole. I will guide discussion and keep learners on topic, encourage them to engage with each other's stories, and model how to give and receive constructive feedback on a literary work.

Younger teens who prefer to be with a younger group may prefer the original Warriors Writing Intensive Camp for age 9-14. I welcome age 13-14 students to choose the class in which they feel most comfortable.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I often jokingly refer to the Warriors series as "Game of Thrones for children," but it's not entirely off the mark. The Warriors books contain violence, character death, forbidden romances, and other common tropes of fantasy genre literature. Original character backstories may also contain sad or violent elements. Works from students may include characters from diverse backgrounds, such as LGBTQIA+, disabled, neurodiverse, and other marginalized groups. If your student is particularly sensitive to a specific topic, please let me know in advance and I will strive to create a safe environment for them. Please note that this is a teen-focused class, and so content may be slightly more mature in nature as writers have gained more life experience.
Supply List
Learners should have access to a writing program such as Google Docs or Word, or should come with paper/notebook and a writing implement. I cannot open PAGES, so any work uploaded to the classroom or sent to me directly should be a Google Doc, .doc, .docx, or cut/pasted.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
