Description
Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
I have 10+ years of experience working with students grades K-12. I served as an educator for the American University Preparatory School, a private boarding school for high school students age 13-18. In addition, I come prepared with knowledge and expertise in academia as well as experience in the professional dance and entertainment industry. My objective is to enhance self-realization within my students by providing an all-inclusive outlet with an array of creative mediums for students to openly express their full artistry.
At the successful completion of the course the students will demonstrate a more in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of Hip Hop technique such as: ● Awareness of total body movement and body isolations; weight shifts; spatial and dynamic contrasts; and relationship to music. ● An ability to comprehend intermediate rhythmic skills characteristic of Hip Hop such as syncopation, dynamic variation, and vocalization of movement. ● Familiarity with basic Hip Hop repertoire and its significant artistic contributors. ● An intermediate understanding of the history of Hip Hop dance including its relationship to specific East and West Coast dance styles as well as dances of the African Diaspora.
Requirements: - Notebook - Regular attendance and participation - Promptness - Water/Hydration - Proper dance/athletic attire e.g. leggings, sweatpants, tshirt, Jazz shoes, sneakers, knee pads, etc. - Willingness to achieve, perform, and take risks in technical and improvisational aspects - Completion of outside assignments including one short concert review paper
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Work in this course will be evaluated in three major categories: participation; progress; and completion of assignments. The student’s overall approach to course content and procedures will determine his/her degree of success. The discipline of dance requires concentration, rhythmic, dynamic, and spatial awareness and an ability to comprehend, retain, and apply movement principles and practices. In the evaluation of student work, the following specifics will be measured and assessed: ● Command of Hip Hop vocabulary ● Kinesthetic and spatial awareness ● Expressiveness ● Dynamic quality and clarity ● Endurance ● Rhythmic accuracy ● Repertory ● Cultural and historical knowledge ● Willingness to incorporate new knowledge ● Willingness to create movement and improvise
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
All music, dance moves, information will be age appropriate and kid and family friendly! :) Students are highly encouraged to practice proper form and movement to reduce any potential injuries. Students are also encouraged to bring water to each class to remain hydrated during class.
