Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Join me over the summer for this 4-week, 4-session class reading of War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. In this wonderfully written World War I story, we read about Joey, a farm horse, as he witnesses the actions and sorrows on the Western Front, all in hopes of returning to his beloved owner, Albert. War Horse is a powerful tale of war, redemption, and a hero’s journey.

The overarching objective for the class is an in-depth look at the settings and themes interwoven throughout the story. Each week also practices a secondary learning objective, such as inferring or visualization. Students will be responsible for reading approximately 40 pages between classes (80 pages per week) outside the class, posting on a Padlet chat room before or during class, and being prepared and participating in the discussion sessions. The discussion posts are easy, fun, and collaborative, leaving the focus of the class on the enjoyment of reading through lively discussion. This wonderfully written tale, combined with a fun and enthusiastic online atmosphere, will surely stir emotions and create a love of storytelling through literature for any young learner. War Horse is recommended for grades 4-8.

I am a fun, engaging, patient, and understanding educator that enjoys teaching and learning. This attitude is evident in my classes! No boring teachers allowed!

Jubilant Tutoring strives to offer all learners a safe, friendly, encouraging, growth-bound environment. My teaching strategy is to facilitate the group, leaving most of the discussion to the young learners and letting them take the wheel often. Sharing ideas, thoughts, and questions is highly encouraged, and piggybacking off others is often met with applause. I have practiced facilitating writing groups in the upper elementary school classroom for over 20 years and have mastered facilitating an enjoyable, fun, engaging, and educational learning group where positive attitudes rule and friendly smiles are abundant.
