In this "Thinking Detectives" class, kids will use their curiosity to investigate and dig deeper into a read-aloud picture book--to be Thinking Detectives! After a read-aloud of Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett, as a class we will discuss the intriguing unknowns of the book. Using reading comprehension, illustration analysis, comparing, contrasting and personal and/or world connections, students and I will try to figure out the book's mysteries. As we wonder, question and think about all the possibilities, as a class we will create a quick oral re-telling of a sequel...Sam and Dave Dig a Hole... Part 2! Class participation and discussion are essential so we all can learn from one another to deepen our critical thinking skills.

Sam and Dave Dig a Hole is one of mine and my previous students' all-time favorite picture books! A book for ALL ages, Author Mac Barnett and Illustrator Jon Klassen created an intriguing yet simple book that allows for very deep critical thinking and discussion. This was a book I read-aloud in every grade K-5 (even for my teens at home) since the book has endless possibilities and topics for wonder. This book brings me joy and hopefully will bring a smile and incite imagination in your kids as well!
My experience is over 8 years as an Elementary School Special Education Teacher, 5th-grade teacher and Teacher-Librarian of K-5. Plus homeschooling both of my sons from middle school until high school graduation.
