Class Experience

US Grade 5
Does your student have interest in learning more about the culture, national parks, and fun facts of some of the states in the U.S.A.? We will have fun learning more about the state birds, native foods, interesting attractions and wild spaces of the beautiful United States of America.

A state report and project is a typical part of the Waldorf curriculum in the 5th grade geography unit but students of all middle school grades can complete this if they are ready for report writing. In this class, students will complete research on a state of their choice, learn to write a reference, write a report, and create an artistic element for their state. We use Harry Potter books to learn to write a reference, explore how to write a bibliography page in our report and find sources in books in Epic or online encyclopedias. In our last class together, students will be given an opportunity to present and share their reports and artistic work with the class.

Week One:
~Introductions
~Students will be given the report guidelines and will be given some direction for completing research.
~We will research one state together as an example of research

Week Two:
~This week we will focus on how to write a reference for the books/online resource that students use in their report. Students will have the opportunity to practice writing references and write their reference page with teacher support during this class time.
~Students will also be given the opportunity to share ideas for the artistic element of the project and get teacher help or support as needed for this.

Week Three:
~We will focus on writing skills and how to form paragraphs for the report in this class. I will read some sample reports so students can see what the expectation is.

Week Four:
~Presentation Class! Students will be given the opportunity to read their report and share their art element with the class.
