Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Did you know that when magma reaches the earth's surface it is known as lava? How about that there are more than 500 active volcanoes around the world? What about where was the largest hurricane of all time? Learn all these facts and more with this fun set of classes that explore different weather or natural events around the world.

This is an ongoing class where children will be able to explore and grow in confidence in reading comprehension.

We will explore the wild world of nature together from volcanoes to wildfires, from hurricanes to sink holes. We will explore amazing facts and share information.
Children will read through passages and answer and discuss information - this lesson has cross curricular links between science and nature and reading comprehension skills. There will be lots of activities and opportunities to interact in the classroom as well.

Children, as well as learning about how amazing our planet is - will be increasing their confidence in answering the following types of questions as we go along:

* Factual
* Inferential
* Primary / main idea
* Author's intent
* Structural

Each week children will learn about different weather or natural phenomenons as listed below:

Other times are available - see below if this timing is more suitable:

EVERY THURSDAY

July 21st  2:00 p.m - 2:25 p.m. -  ☀️ Horrible Heatwaves and Dangerous Droughts ☀️

Recently the world is being overwhelmed by extreme heatwaves and droughts. Did you know that some heatwaves are so hot they can make roads crack? Do you know what is a heat dome is and how it is formed? Which countries have beens severely affected by heatwaves and drought conditions this year? And finally, how would you cope in an extreme heatwave? Droughts and heatwaves have a very big effect upon the health of people. A lack of water and subsequently food can be dangerous to people, animals and plants. Many countries are facing drought more often but do not have the tools to combat it or cope with it. Did you know that drought can lead to conflict over water shortages and food supplies? We also look at how climate change may have affected the frequency of heatwaves and droughts.

July 28th 2:00 p.m - 2:25 p.m. -  🌇 Enormous Earthquakes  🌇

What does an earthquake feel like? Near or far? Do you know it lasts? Why do earthquakes hit particular areas of the planet? Learners will explore devastating earthquakes that have hit different regions of the world. Do you know the stages of an earthquake, and how dogs can help to rescue people? Learners will also discover awesome facts about tectonic plates and how scientists can predict the timing and measure the magnitude of an earthquake.

August 4th 2.00 p.m. - 2:25 p.m -  🗻 Lawless Landslides 🗻

In this lesson we will explore terrifying landslides. Did you know that landslides take place when masses of rock, earth, or debris move down a slope. Debris (loose material or rock) flows, also known as mudslides, are a common type of fast-moving landslide that tends to flow in channels. Mudslides develop when water rapidly accumulates in the ground and results in a surge of water-saturated rock, earth, and debris. We will learn were landslides are common place and how the local environment and wildlife are effected. Learners will discover how people can stay safe in a landslide.

August 11th 2.00 p.m - 2:25 p.m -❄️🧊 Impervious Ice Storms 🧊❄️

Ice storms are fascinating. Did you know that they are caused by freezing rain? In the U.S. ice storms can happen usually between December and January. Ice storms can be deadly to humans and animals. Did you know that ice storms can make trees split and roads become an ice rink? Ice storms can also leave homes without power - which can be catastrophic in these wintery conditions!

August 18th 2.00 p.m -2:25 p.m. - Aggressive Avalanches

Are you curious about avalanches? Well you are in the right place! Learners will explore the wonders of avalanches, finding the answers to these questions about these natural disasters. This lesson is complete with incredible pictures to keep students captivated and learners will all embark on a Zoom journey into the great unknown. Did you know that an avalanche takes place when a layer of snow collapses and slides downhill. Avalanches are caused by four factors: a steep slope, snow cover, a weak layer in the snow cover and a trigger. Did you know that roads and railway tracks may be rerouted to reduce risks? Or that
safe avalanches may be triggered in dangerous snow packs? Join me and learn all about these facts and much more!

August 25th 2.00 p.m - 3.00 p.m. - Egregious Coastal Erosion

Coastal erosion is a huge issue. Countries do all they can to protect their coastlines from falling into the every present tides of the sea. Erosion is the geological process in which land is gradually worn away by natural forces such as wind or water. Coastal erosion is a big problem as it will result in fewer beaches and will have a huge effect on people who live near the coast where tourism is very important. Coastal erosion can cause homes to fall into the sea, flood and loss of habitat. Join this lesson to learn more!

September 1st 2.00 p.m - 3.00 p.m. -🔥🌋Volatile Volcanoes🌋🔥

The exciting natural event of the volcanic eruption and the volcano itself have fascinated both adults and children for many thousands of years. Scorching melted rock originating from under the earth's crust forcing its way up through cracks in the earth's crust only to erupt causing chaos and fascination at the same time. The fury of the volcano can affect people far and wide for weeks to months to possibly years! This class explores a little history (Pompeii, La Palma), a little science (extrusive and intrusive rocks), a little English comprehension skills with a lot of fun and action. Join me as we discover famous volcanoes, lava, magma, ash, igneous rocks and plumes of ash cloud.

September 8th 2.00 p.m - 3.00 p.m. 🌧 🌪Fierce Hurricanes 🌪🌧 and Terrible Tornados

Fierce hurricanes and tornados have terrorized humans, animals and plants alike for millions of years. Destroying and uprooting everything in their path. This lesson will explore nature's most dangerous and destructive forces. As we journey together through this topic we will explore striking images and videos that offer a view of catastrophic weather conditions. Learners will be able to to see into the eye of a cyclone via video and photos. Hurricanes and tornadoes are not just wind, with them they bring torrential weather such as hailstones the size of tennis balls! They can turn a gentle stream into a raging surge within a few minutes. We will also discover how scientists learn the techniques developed through the centuries to forecast the weather and finally how human impact has affected the frequency and location of hurricanes through climate change.

September 15th 2.00 p.m - 3.00 p.m. 🔥 Wild Wildfires 🔥

September 22nd 2.00 p.m - 3.00 p.m.   🌊 Terrible Tsunamis 🌊
Did you know that the tsunami is most common around the region of the planet known as the 'Ring of Fire'? Or that the most common cause of the tsunami is an underwater earthquake? We will also learn about how to spot the signs of tsunami and what do to if there is one! Come and join and learn all about these extreme natural events!
