Welcome! Topics: In this class, we will be discussing the geology of Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island (MDI) in Maine. We will talk about the volcanoes that make up the island and form the granite mountains, the glaciers that carved the granite, and the coastlines that are currently eroding. In this class, I will start from the "older" events - deeper in geologic time, and work towards the present. First, I will briefly cover the topic of geologic time, and then spend some time discussing the volcanoes that make up the island. Then, I will cover more "recent" events, including the ice sheets, and coastal erosion. I will also briefly discuss the National Park system's role in the preservation of the park. What to expect from me: I love to hear from the students! I run an interactive classroom with active discussions and demonstrations. I will provide some videos and slides, but I will mostly use the power of observation to lead the learning! I encourage questions throughout. Prior knowledge: There is no prior knowledge necessary. I require just some curiosity and a desire to explore somewhere new!
Learning Goals
At the end of my class, students should have a basic understanding of:
1. Geologic processes on different time scales.
2. How to identify granite in the wild.
3. How the ice sheet shaped the landscape of Mount Desert Island.
4. How the ocean shapes the coastline of Mount Desert Island.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Dr. Stephanie Heath, and I am so excited to offer classes about my favorite subjects here on Outschool! In my free time I love to travel to national parks with my family, solve puzzles, and escape from escape rooms. My favorite hobby is geocaching, which I have been a part of for over 10 years.
Experience: I have a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Cincinnati, and an M.S. and B.S. in Earth Sciences from University of Maine. My specialty is glacial geology and climate change and I have traveled to and worked in both Greenland and Antarctica! I have taught numerous introductory geology classes to college students over the last several years, and I also have several years of teaching geology to ages 9-18 as a Boy Scout merit badge counselor.
Teaching Philosophy: My favorite way to teach is by inviting the students to be curious, make observations and ask questions. I encourage students to come to their own conclusions, as I firmly believe this makes more of an impact and fosters deeper learning. Depending on the subject, my classes may be more lecture-based, but there will always be some degree of discussion and interaction!
