Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of classical vocal technique, including breath control, vocal placement, diction, phrasing, and musical expression. The course will also focus on building confidence in performance, understanding vocal health, and exploring classical repertoire appropriate for young voices. Students will receive individualized feedback to help them grow as singers while learning to appreciate the beauty and discipline of classical singing. If a student has an interest in a different style of singing, but would like more power or would like to address an issue (not singing in tune, for example, weak breath or would like improved high notes), I can apply classical concepts for these students as well.

Throughout the course, students will engage in a variety of topics essential to classical vocal training (see Learning goals for more details).

Each lesson follows a structured yet flexible format designed to keep students engaged while reinforcing key skills. A typical class session includes:

Warm-up Exercises – A guided vocal warm-up focusing on technique and vocal health.
Repertoire Practice – Students will work on assigned songs, applying the skills they are learning.
Individual Feedback & Coaching

This class will be highly interactive and supportive. I will use a combination of live demonstrations, guided exercises, student participation, and real-time feedback to help students grasp vocal techniques.

My teaching style is engaging, student-centered, and supportive. I believe in encouraging students to explore their voices with confidence while maintaining a disciplined approach to technique. I balance technical instruction with fun and creative exercises, helping students to not only improve but also to enjoy the process of learning classical singing. My approach is tailored to each student's needs, ensuring that everyone, regardless of experience level, feels comfortable and challenged.

Live instruction and demonstrations – I will actively teach and demonstrate techniques during class.
Each student will have the opportunity to sing and receive personalized coaching.
Discussions and Q&A – I will encourage open discussions about vocal technique, repertoire, and performance strategies.

This course is designed so that students will have a strong foundation in classical voice, improved confidence in their singing, and an appreciation for the artistry of classical music. Whether they are preparing for auditions, performances, or simply wish to develop their skills, this class will provide the guidance and encouragement they need to grow as singers.

Learning Needs
I have experience with many learning styles and challenges. I love getting to know students and their optimal learning styles. Please feel free to let me know if you like to learn in a certain way or have specific challenges.
Pre-Requisites
No experience needed, but I'm happy to work on competition material! In most cases, you should be high school age. I'm willing to take mature middle-school aged children after a trial lesson.
Supply List
I can help parents and guardians find inexpensive sheet music that is copyright compliant.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Students who participate in choirs will often be assigned repertoire for competition. Students may be trying out for solos. Often this will require the purchase of sheet music. This can be very inexpensive and even free on the internet in the case of music with no copyright. I will advise the student and guardians on how to keep copyright compliant.
