Hi, I’m Demetria- a singer/songwriter and independent artist who enjoys spreading positive messages of overcoming hardships and finding joy. I was trained classically in piano beginning at age 9, but quickly began to pick up on a new style and learned to play gospel music, jazz and blues chords by ear. Because I found freedom in expression through improvisation, I became completely passionate about learning the piano at an early age. Singing and playing the piano has been a part of my life for the past three decades and continues to be a source of joy for me. I have now been a singer and songwriter for over thirty years and have been involved in many showcases- singing and playing piano for local events, weddings, and church services. I have also taught basic music theory in homeschool groups and in private lessons. While in college, I was a member of the African American Gospel Choir (affectionately known as the “Afros” at the University of Alabama),. Additionally, I am a member of the Music Teachers National Association. I believe that we are all capable of expressing artistry through music and that it takes no special skill or talent to be able to appreciate and enjoy our inherent connection to music. However, it is my goal to help your student learn to grow in musicality and vocal skill. I look forward to meeting and working with your students!
Some weeks I may send home music that students may choose to practice in between sessions. These are not required for participation in class but serve as an extra resource. New material is presented each week and does not build on the skills from previous weeks, as the content is repetitive in nature. Students are never required to practice skills taught, but are encouraged. Recordings of the class will be made available upon request should you need to review material taught in class.
Materials for each week will be posted in the classroom the weekend prior to class session. They are not necessary or required, but printing the worksheets will be helpful each week that I provide them. You may also opt to keep them on a digital device.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
