US Grade 8 - 11
This is a fantastic class for SAT / ACT vocabulary practice. Using explicit instruction, we will learn definitions, antonyms, synonyms, and word etymology with visuals and examples. New words will be selected from SAT and ACT vocabulary practice lists each week. Students will receive virtual flashcards to practice our words throughout the week. This is an ongoing class that will reoccur weekly at the same time. Students can attend each week or pause if they need to skip a class. Class structure: A word organizer will be posted before class for students to keep vocabulary words organized. Students will be shown a word and corresponding pictures related to its definition. To engage their thinking, students will try to guess the definition based on the picture(s). Next, I will provide explicit instruction on the word’s definition and etymology. We will discuss synonyms, antonyms, and practice correct word pronunciation. Students will be encouraged to add each new word to their weekly vocabulary organizer. By doing so, they will accumulate a comprehensive packet of review words to aid in their test preparation and success. At the end of class, students will match definitions, synonyms, and antonyms to the words they have learned. This activity reinforces their learning and challenges them to recall the new words quickly. At the conclusion of each session, students will receive virtual practice flashcards to review the new vocabulary words throughout the week. Note: I will provide the link in the classroom page to our virtual flashcards (created on the scratch platform). Students will be able to use these flashcards to review our weekly vocabulary words as they would like. Weekly Schedule: Week or 7/14 - ACT vocabulary words starting with letters A and L Week of 7/21 - SAT vocabulary words starting with letters M and S Week of 7/28 - ACT vocabulary words starting with letters B and T Week of 8/4 - SAT vocabulary words starting with letters P and H
