Having a rich, full vocabulary is valuable for many reasons. Academically, it is very helpful for taking standardized tests and aiding in general reading comprehension. Outside the classroom, an extensive vocabulary also allows us to express ourselves with greater clarity and more nuanced shades of meaning. In this ongoing vocabulary building class, each week learners will be introduced to 6 words taken from SAT vocabulary lists. For each word, learners will be presented with a short excerpt or sentence examples to read the word in context. They will be given an opportunity to guess the definition of the word. Then learners will be presented with the definition and part of speech for the word. Finally, learners will be asked to produce and share a sentence using the word. Each session will be a stand alone lesson of 6 vocabulary words, so learners can jump in any time and stay for as many weeks as they wish. Although this is an academic class, discussion in class is encouraged. The goal is not only to master vocabulary for the sake of academic performance but also to foster a love for words and clear communication. Words that will be covered each week for the month of November 2024: Week of November 3rd: voracious, extrapolate, appease, ineptitude, brazen, anomaly Week of November 10th: arduous, abnegate, circumspect, impede, opulence, lamentation Week of November 17th: mercenary, insolence, diffidence, decimate, polarize, conflagration Week of November 24th: decorum, introspection, diverge, relegate, credulous, harried
Learning Goals
Learners will gain familiarity with academic vocabulary.

Hello! My name is Lydia, and I love teaching! I have taught public school, private school, daycare, and home school co-op classes to learners of a wide variety of ages. While I have taught all different kinds of subjects, my favorite subjects are literature and drama (and juggling, if that can be considered a subject!) I enjoy acting in my local community theater.
I know that people learn in a variety of ways. I try to be attentive to my students and adapt my teaching style to suit their needs. I like to have fun while learning!
I live in the beautiful mountains of East Tennesee with my husband and two daughters. My daughters and I really enjoy all the wildlife we get to see.
