Class Experience

Build a powerful SAT, ACT, or ISEE vocabulary in a fun, engaging environment! This class goes beyond memorization, helping learners understand words in context through interactive activities like word association games, Vocabulary Bingo, and fast-paced synonym challenges. Each week, students will be introduced to high-impact words commonly found on major standardized test, explore their meanings and origins, and apply them in creative ways to reinforce retention.

Through digital tools, word mapping exercises, and sentence challenges, learners will gain confidence using advanced vocabulary naturally in writing and conversation. Whether playing Kahoot, filling in the blanks, or analyzing word etymology, students will sharpen their verbal skills in a lively, supportive setting. Get ready to expand your vocabulary, strengthen your test-taking strategies, and have fun while doing it!

This class has a weekly theme that rotates on an 8-week cycle. Learners are welcome to join anytime! When we restart at week one, the theme will remain the same, but we'll be exploring new vocabulary words each time we cycle through.

Week 3: Analytical Words (e.g., infer, deduce)
Week 4: Tone Words (e.g., sardonic, nostalgic)
Week 5: Transition Words (e.g., however, moreover)
Week 6: Words for Writing (e.g., elucidate, substantiate)
Week 7: Common SAT Traps (e.g., equivocal, ambivalent)
Week 8: Roots and Prefixes (e.g., bene-, mal-, -logy)

For example, our first three weeks of class will focus on the following words:

Meagan:
Meagan is the founder of Hub of Curiosity and has been teaching on Outschool for 6 years. She's a veteran homeschool mom who strongly believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to learning. She believes learning should be fun, engaging, and interactive. Expect a casual atmosphere in class where learners can ask questions, share their ideas, and have fun... all while learning.

Meagan’s high school years of studying Latin—though she may have bemoaned them at the time—equipped her with a deep understanding of word etymology. Now, she uses that expertise to help learners break down complex vocabulary, empowering them with the skills they need to excel on their upcoming test.

Meagan is an avid reader and can't consume enough historical fiction from the World War II period. She's also a keen adventurer and can be packed to go to the next town or around the world in under an hour.
