Class Experience

Join me to boost and strengthen your child's reading, writing and speaking vocabulary! Students will be introduced to new vocabulary words found within children's chapter books. Words will be found and read briefly in text and then pulled OUT and APART! We will discuss and journal the part of speech, definition, synonyms, antonyms, draw a quick sketch to show understanding and use in in our own words, speaking and writing.

Instruction will also include a basic introduction to Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes which are the building blocks of higher level vocabulary in the upper elementary grades.

I will model how to fill out our vocabulary diagram along with students as they share their input and ideas. Students should expect to discuss new vocabulary words each class as well as make connections between words and show their understanding through class conversation, drawing and writing. The whole class will be focus around student input and sharing their connections between words. Because of the small group setting, students are encouraged to share and comment often!

Students will have the opportunity to present their own vocabulary word from an independent reading text to the class.

Students "word banks" will grow as their own personal vocabulary grows and they build word analysis skills to use during independent reading.
Learning Goals
Students will learn new vocabulary words as they focus on word attributes: part of speech, definitions, synonyms, antonyms. Also, we will break apart words by their prefixes, roots and suffixes so students can begin to determine meaning from higher level words using word analysis skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello Families! I am joining Outschool as an elementary and special education teacher who loves the sciences, reading and writing! I have my Master's degree in Literacy as well as my Bachelor's degree in Childhood and Special Education. I taught 4th and 5th grade classroom and special education for 5 years. After having children of my own, I began working as a one-on-one tutor to students in 4th and 5th grade.

I'm thrilled to be offering classes of my own, which were engaging and effective in the public school setting, and now can we shared with more students! My first and foremost consideration as a virtual teacher is to compliment and deliver skills, strategies and content which can carry over to a student's classroom. My goal is to prepare students to be an independent thinkers and problem solvers. The skills I teach will do just that. They will be introduced in a small group classroom where students can share and expand on each other's ideas. Furthermore, students will hone their skills and be supported as they work toward using the skills and strategies on their own.

I believe all students can and will learn when they are supported, taught a variety of strategies, interested and challenged by what they are learning. I can't wait to learn with you and from you!
