Students often get bored during class and start doodling meaninglessly in the corner of their notes. Boredom is a sign of unused intelligence. What if they could use their creativity to doodle MEANINGFULLY in their notes? As a professional game designer, animator, web designer, educator, and life long learner, I have found that drawing my notes, using the viznotes technique, allows me to - remember more of what I wrote/drew - allows me to review my notes more easily - makes me look like a genius to my peers - is more fun - is more engaging - illustrates my understanding of the material - allows me to say more with less words (a picture is worth a 1,000 words) - be more organized In this one-time event class I will 1. Show examples of Visual Notes, 2. walk students step by step through some different methods, techniques, and structures they can implement, and 3. then we will practice the technique and show off our notes to everyone else in the class. I taught high school graphic design classes for 9 years, and nearly all of my students loved this technique.
Learning Goals
Students will learn specifically how to use bullets, lists, icons, symbols, stick figures, shapes, all caps, combinations of bold and italic, lines, stars, hearts, folds in the paper, colors, charts, and illustrations to quickly capture everything they learn in class.
I will also show them how to abbreviate ideas down to their core key words instead of writing full sentences.
Lastly they will learn how to divide up sections to show the flow and structure of every lecture they listen to.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Shaun D. McMillan. I teach creative art classes and classes on how to start a business. I graduated with a degree in Animation in the city of Los Angeles, California and have worked as a professional animator, graphic designer, web designer, and game artist at various studios. In 2012 I became a high school teacher teaching various different computer art courses including Graphic Design and Game Design classes for a total of seven years. After realizing the potential of Game Based Learning I worked together with my high school students to create multiple political science simulations and educational games, including, “ALLIANCE The Ultimate World Leader Political Science Simulation Megagame,” in which 72 participants are given 4 hours to solve a simulation of all the world’s geopolitical problems. I now create YouTube videos, publish games, draw, and write graphic novels.
