Class Experience

The Visual Goal Setting Board class is a completely unique class centered on a visualization tool that creates a private, sacred space for your child to define their dreams, goals, and desires. (Video from my local workshops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sIff9x658A)

By creating their own personal Visual Goal Setting Board your children become an active participant in the creation of their futures. In this class, we will create a 1-3 year goal list that will include personal, academic, friendship, family, hobby, sports, and volunteering goals. We’ll talk about the keys to success in achieving these goals. We’ll create my “S” curve for planning actions. They will learn how to check in with their visual goal setting board weekly to create actions.

I’ve done this class in workshops locally, private in-home sessions, on Zoom, and via the phone from ages 4 to 65 for individuals, groups, and families. The results have been amazing for families. As an outsider, I’ve seen an increased focus on things the kids want to learn. One set of sisters wanted to read chapter books. At the time of creating their vision boards, they were 5 and 6 years old. By the end of that year, they both added learning to multiply as a new goal because they achieved the chapter book goal. One wants to become an artist and the other one wants to learn to cook, this was news to mom. With the new support for her goal, the eldest entered in a local art contest and she won first place. The family purchased some child-friendly cooking tools and now mom has an extra hand in the kitchen from the youngest. This leads me to the other result I see. The improved bond of the family. Even in the most supportive families, children do have a notion of what is acceptable to dream of as goals. In the classes, and workshops that I host the children don’t feel that self-imposed judgment. Guess what, we parents do the same thing to ourselves so don’t for a second think you're sending your children the wrong message. It's their own inner voice, we all have that little voice.

Goals some of the kids typically create:
Scouting badge achievement
Popcorn sales
Karate belt level achievements
Gymnastics levels
Dance class styles
Increasing the number of baskets achieved in basketball
Increasing the number of goals and assists per soccer game
Increasing reading/math levels
A certain minimum score on spelling tests
Completing a whole book series
Learning to ride horses
Learning to ride a bike
Learning to build a robot
Going to an observatory
Swimming with dolphins
Learning to bake cookies
A certain number of “Mommy Bucks” (a reward earning/shopping system )

This is a two-day class that will be for one hour each day. The class size is limited to 6 students so each child has an ample opportunity to verbally brainstorm their goals.

Day 1: Creating short and long-term goals (Journal or notebook and pen/pencil needed)
Brainstorming, clarification, writing, action planning with timelines

Homework: seeking pictures, words, phrases, and quotes that represent the goals using magazines, mailers, and the internet with a printer. You can also add stickers. The scrapbook stickers have themes that fit a lot of hobbies, sports and even a little bit of academic goals.

Day 2 Creating a Visual Goal Setting Board (poster board, glue, markers, and homework needed)
Planning layout of the board, confirming that this is the correct pictures for the goal (making sure there is no inner critic judging the possibility that the image and goal are doable)

The final result of this class is a physical Visual Goal Setting Board, the ability to articulate their goals and to have an action plan with a weekly follow up sequence.

I’m Kyria Kalata, an author, tutor, ESL teacher, and the proud founder of the House of Education. With a background as a TV journalist and a veteran homeschool mom, I’ve explored all mainstream educational options to bring the best to my students.

My classes are centered around reading, writing, and goal setting - the fundamental skills that empower children to take control of their educational journey.

As a child diagnosed with dyslexia, I faced academic limitations. But I discovered that the library was a treasure trove, filled with textbooks and teaching resources that transformed my life. I overcame the barriers set by my learning label, and I’m passionate about helping children everywhere do the same.

Today, I often meet parents who are frustrated because they struggle to teach their child to read. I’ve seen mothers and daughters at my doorstep in tears, feeling defeated. I believe that reading should be a joy, not a source of pain. With 12 years of experience teaching children aged 3-18 to read (including many for whom English is a second language), I’ve developed fun, innovative methods that make the transition to reading natural and enjoyable.

I invite you to join one of my sample classes to experience the joy of learning. Let’s transform the way your child reads and sets goals, shaping a brighter future for them.
