In this one time course, students will learn about the formation of glaciers in Patagonia, approach some geography and history of Chile and Argentina, and encounter a few of the animals that live in the region.

Did you know that one of the coldest places in the world is in South America? This one-time class will take students through the mountains, deserts, and glaciers of Patagonia where different groups of people have lived for over ten thousand years. In the class, we will talk about the history of this unique region, geography and climate, and some of the cultural traditions of the Mapuche people. In this course students will: - Learn what countries make up the region of Patagonia - Investigate how fjords have been formed in Chile and Argentina by glaciers - Explore Mapuche history and traditions like silverwork, jewelry, textiles and fashion, and leadership by Machis (women) - View some animals of the region - Experience South America through sight and sound
The instructor has a PhD in Latin American Studies and has taught introductory courses in the subject for six years, including a version that meets Louisiana state educational standards in Social Studies.
This one-time class has no homework. If students want to learn even more, they are welcome to enroll in one of my longer courses or sign up for an independent project with me!
No materials need to be purchased.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will participate in a brief self-assessment at the beginning and end of the one-session class.
55 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
