Virtual Field Trip: Marine Mammals, Sea Otters, California Seals & Beluga Whales
Students will understand the 5 characteristics that make an organism a "mammal" and students will observe three different representatives of three taxonomic groups in the marine mammals through live streams from world-famous aquariums.

Students will discuss the 5 characteristics that characterize animals as mammals. Then students will utilize live feeds from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Georgia Aquarium to observe 3 different representatives of marine mammals Beluga Whales, Sea Otters, and California Sea lions and discuss the characteristics that separate different taxonomic groups of marine mammals. Then the students will choose one of the marine mammals we have studied and utilizing information from the IUCN red list will dive into human impacts on the species of their choosing and the conservation initiatives that are targeting these populations.

I am an environmental educator. Prior to COVID-19 shutdowns, I taught inquiry-based and experiential marine science in the San Francisco Bay Area with a non-profit for two years. Prior to that, I served in AmeriCorps twice where I worked in science and math classrooms. I have a degree in Conservation Biology and Marine Science, and my passion is educating everyone about our non-human neighbors.
