Violence Prevention and Defense for Teens: An in-Depth Course

Class
Sensei Rick: Martial Arts, Self-Defense & Wellness
Average rating:5.0Number of reviews:(1,280)
In this 6-class course, we will discuss prevention & awareness, various types of violence, de-escalation, the importance of seeking professional mental health support, and learn basic yet effective physical defense skills.

Class experience

Students will learn that prevention is the key to self-defense. We always want to do what we can to prevent dangerous situations. If prevention has not worked, we want to try and de-escalate and resolve the situation with communication if possible. If all of this fails and/or things get physical, this is where physical defense concepts come in. We teach that it is always a last resort but if it happens, we must look at it that it is not about hurting someone, it is about preventing them from hurting you! All of our physical defense skills are rooted in gross motor skills, not fine motor skills because fine motor skills are inaccessible when someone is in fight/flight/freeze adrenaline response. No matter someone’s age, gender, size, physical limitations, these skills are applicable and accessible to ALL.
We have a combined 30 years of experience in teaching self defense and violence prevention to kids and teens across the world, including public and private schools, afterschool programs, private sessions, camps and workshops. We've taught thousands of high school students. We are educated and trained in trauma sensitive and trauma informed teaching approaches.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Because we are discussing violence prevention and self defense, we recommend parents/adults be within ear shot of their child and to offer support to discuss the subject matter afterwards. Sometimes questions can come up after our lessons once the information has had a chance to be absorbed. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions your child may have, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Most questions are very common and ones we hear often!

It is strongly recommended that a parent/guardian is present to ensure the student's safety (e.g., clear training area - free of toys, nearby furniture, pets, siblings, etc), and that a parent/guardian help the student to set up their device so that the teacher can have a clear view of the student. It is also recommended that the device have as large a screen as possible, or be hooked up to a television with an HDMI cable. Also, please note that it is Outschool's policy that only the registered student is allowed to be on camera (e.g., no parents, siblings, etc, should be on camera during class time).

Students must wear appropriate athletic clothing - sweatpants/track pants, or leggings are recommended, whereas shorts/dresses/skirts are inappropriate for training, and students will be asked to change if they are dressed inappropriately on camera.

Finally, having a water bottle nearby is highly suggested.
