Class Experience

Note: This is not a videogame-teaching class. It is a group social hangout for Minecraft and Roblox fans. We will be using third party applications such as Minecraft and Roblox. Parents will need to set up or monitor the set up of Minecraft and Roblox accounts prior to students joining the class. In doing so, parental consent is implied.

This is a meetup group for kids who enjoy Minecraft and Roblox, and want to connect with other like-minded children. The class is student-led; I will not be teaching any videogame. Students can share their creations and can talk about everything related to the game. The purpose of this class is for children who have a common interest to connect with each other socially in a safe setting. Students can talk about tips, mastery, and their progress in Minecraft and Roblox. Often, students play/work together or independently on either Minecraft and Roblox. If the classroom is quiet, it is because everyone is playing together or working on their Minecraft creations until they feel ready to share!

Students should have fair knowledge of Minecraft and Roblox, and have the ability to discuss the games with other students. Although, I will moderate the class, it will be entirely led by student discussion. I will foster good communication, respect and social connections within the group. This is an ongoing group so students may join or leave the class at any time.

I do require the students to keep their cameras on for the duration of the class, given that it is a highly social group. Thank you for understanding.

Parental Guidance
The students will be using either/both Minecraft o and Roblox. These are Outschool-approved third party tools. They may play games independently by themselves or with each other together in class. In order to use both games, students will need to set up an account externally on the game website. Students may need to share game-tags in order to join private servers. In those cases, game tags will not be shared in the classroom or chat. To ensure the safety of students, gametes will be communicated via private message.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Thank you for visiting my profile. I am a neuroscientist and educator. I enjoy teaching children about science - in particular, how science connects the world around us in ways we don't often think about. I try to encourage children to get excited about learning new concepts and to apply them in different situations. I teach classes on neuroscience, animal cognition, public health, and biology. I also enjoy hosting classes on Star Wars, and special topics of interest, mostly as requested by my own students!
I do animal research in the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry. I have 3 Master degrees - Clinical Psychology, Biopsychology, and Neuroscience. I completed my Masters (MS) and doctorate (Ph.D.) in Neuropharmacology from Texas Christian University and University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC). I then did two postdoctoral fellowships in Neuropsychopharmacology at Harvard Medical School. I was a university professor before joining a global pharmaceutical company.
My teaching philosophy is simple - I try to encourage children to be independent thinkers and to find connections in life about them. This will help them stay excited about learning and be life-long learners.
