Video Game Music Composition
Class experience
Note: This is a four part, intensive course that is geared towards students with a strong desire to compose and learn about music. For a more introductory course, find my hour long "Video Game Music Part 1" course. In this four week class, students will learn how to compose their own video game music by emulating the musical styles of some of the greatest soundtracks. Each week, we will start with listening sessions where we will study an iconic video game melody along with some music...
Students will analyze iconic video game melodies using musical vocabulary and concepts taught by the teacher (pitch, tempo, rhythm, texture, dynamics, etc). Students will compose their own video game music that emulates the style of other video game melodies and share their compositions with the class.
I have two degrees in music (B.A. Music Education, M.M. Music Composition) and have taught Elementary General Music (K-5) in the Michigan Public Schools for 5 years. In addition, I have done extensive scholarly research into video game music and have presented on this topic at several graduate music conferences (U of Toronto, U of Kansas City-Lawrence, etc).
Homework Offered
There will be no outside work for this class, however students can optionally keep composing once they leave class (I encourage it!).0 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The class is built around independent work during class time, and my job as a teacher will be to occasionally check in with students throughout the class period.Grades Offered
We will be using the website Mario Paint Music Composer as our primary means of music composition, which is a free piece of software available in a web browser. I will send this to students in the chat so they can easily click the link. If you would like to explore this website before class, feel free to follow this link: https://danielx.net/composer/#api-EH9cxjlXtpRKbUxZoSpbKMpn0G4Ev0hBklWuP6FvKbQ
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
None. Video games with inappropriate content (i.e. violence) will not be discussed.
This class is based on my own research into video game music from books ("A Composer's Guide to Game Music"), scholarly articles ("Nintendo and Telos: Will You Ever Reach the End?"), and YouTube channels (username "Scruffy"). I have broken down these complex sources for young students to understand.
Note: I am currently stepping away from teaching large Outschool classes, but I am open to teach private music lessons. I am especially adept working with students interested in video game music and digital audio music. Feel free to send me a...
