Video Game Music (Ages 10+)
Class experience
Note: This is a great one hour introductory course for students who love video games and/or music! For a more skilled and in-depth course, take a look at my four part "Video Game Music Composition" course. From Mario to Minecraft, we will dive into the history of video game music and analyze some of the greatest video game melodies! Students will participate in creative listening activities, using only an audio clip to imagine what the on-screen action in the video game might look like. ...
Students will learn a brief overview of 50 years of video game music history. Students will also learn basic musical vocabulary and basic video game design concepts. Most importantly, students will improve their deep listening skills and learn to pick out subtle details in video game music that complement the visuals in the game itself.
I have two degrees in music (B.A. Music Education, M.M. Music Composition) and have taught Elementary General Music (K-5) in the Michigan Public Schools for 5 years. In addition, I have done extensive scholarly research into video game music and have presented on this topic at several graduate music conferences (U of Toronto, U of Kansas City-Lawrence, etc).
No supplies or resources needed, except for your ears!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
None. Video games with inappropriate content (i.e. violence) will not be discussed.
This class is based on my own research into video game music from books ("A Composer's Guide to Game Music"), scholarly articles ("Nintendo and Telos: Will You Ever Reach the End?"), and YouTube channels (username "Scruffy"). I have broken down these complex sources for young students to understand.
Note: I am currently stepping away from teaching large Outschool classes, but I am open to teach private music lessons. I am especially adept working with students interested in video game music and digital audio music. Feel free to send me a...
