Class Experience

This class will introduce students to the coordinate plane and pre-algebra by exploring the coordinate grid on different video game maps. This class will be discussion based as well as interactive exploration of video game maps. I think teaching well requires high quality instruction and high levels of student engagement. I do my best to make sure that students are interested in the topic and are excited to be part of the discussion! I'm always open to accepting feedback on the fly and am always asking students and parents what I can do to better support their learning.

Week 1: Introduction to the Coordinate Plane - What is it? Why do we use it in math?
Week 2: Coordinate plane practice (Identifying locations given an ordered pair).
Week 3: Continue coordinate plane practice - find ordered pairs given locations on a map. Find distance between two ordered pairs.
Week 4: Multi-Step Problems using the Coordinate Plane and drawing lines between two points.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to label the coordinate grid including the x and y axis, as well as positive and negative coordinates on the map. We will also learn about ordered pairs and begin exploring the idea of slope and graphing lines. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify and label parts of the map using ordered pairs.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hey learners!

My name is Sean and I love exploring. I believe that learning and exploring are the same things. A bad teacher makes learning boring and hard, but a good teacher (hopefully me!) makes learning an exciting adventure. I taught in schools for 5 and a half years, trying my best to make students feel excited about coming to school every day. I am confident that students learn better when they are interested in the subject and the teacher is knowledgable and passionate about their work.

Topics I love to teach on include math, nature and the outdoors, history, and really good books. It's so important to think about these things and many others with an equity lens, which means learning and talking about how many people in our world don't have a equal or fair chance to experience the same things you or I do. I love to teach, think, and talk about that as well, because I think it helps make the world a better place if we all work to improve our understanding of how our privileges shape who we are and how we experience the world.

For fun, I love to go rock climbing. It's both a mental and physical challenge, like solving a really hard maze while simultaneously doing a really hard workout. It's a great way to destress and spend quality time with others in the outdoors!
