Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 7
Beginner Level
Let's learn how to code using Scratch! This class has 4 different lessons where we will design a simple video game using popular video game characters, see schedule below. Self paced courses are pre-recorded classes you can take on your own time, whenever it fits best in your schedule! These courses work especially well for coding because you can pause or go back at any time, and work at your own pace. Each class is designed so that kids who are new to Scratch/coding, as well as experienced kids will be able to participate. Younger students or students who are new to Scratch, may need some assistance from an adult at the beginning.

When kids learn to code and create their own games, they are are the creators, rather than just the user of someone else's creation. It is an excellent skill for technology loving kids that required problem solving, multitasking, creativity, and story telling. Through coding they learn the complexities of video game creation, and benefit from actually creating the game, rather than just playing the finished product. Once they've taken this class, they will be able to use their Scratch account and knowledge they've gained to continue making their own creations, even after class has ended.

In this class you will need a computer and a web browser open to https://scratch.mit.edu/. Please create a username and password before class starts so you can save the project we create. We will not be using Scratch Jr. or any apps in this class. This class works best if taken using two screens so students can easily see the teacher's screen and their own, but one screen will work too.

Students are encouraged to share the link to their final game in the classroom. Other students can view and comment on each other's games, and check out how other student's code differs from theirs. If student's need help they can send a message to the instructor for further assistance.

Learning Goals

Through the process of building 4 Scratch games together, students will learn the fundamentals of block code, and gain the knowledge needed to start building games on their own.
