1 hour per week. Students who tend to work more slowly may wish to use extra time after class to finish their artworks.Class Experience
This class is for aspiring artists who love the paintings of Vincent van Gogh! In each lesson, we'll use oil pastels to emulate van Gogh's textured, fluid painting style as we create a drawing inspired by his artworks. Students will follow along with a teacher-led demonstration, but are encouraged to add their own unique details as desired! We will end each class with a beautiful, completed drawing***. Skills we will practice include: drawing from observation, creating movement & texture, optical mixing (color theory), and shading. The week's classes will reference the following artworks: day 1: "Starry Night Over the Rhone," 1888 (the OTHER Starry Night!) day 2: "Road with Cypress and Star," 1890 day 3: "Sunflowers," 1888 day 4: "Starry Night," 1889 (the famous one!) ***Although each demonstration will be finished by the end of class, students who work more slowly may need or wish to continue drawing after we have signed off for the day. Everyone works at a different speed, and it's better to take our time than to rush! ***************************************** To see more of Ms. Kristy's classes, visit my teacher profile here: https://outschool.com/teachers/Kristine-Mankin#us3u0MdGLD
Learning Goals
Students will practice using oil pastels while developing fundamental drawing skills including: drawing from observation, creating movement & texture, optical mixing (color theory), and shading. It is a goal of this class that students will also become more confident and fluid in their drawing, and better equipped to construct their own creative artworks.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Younger students may need some help to set up their art space before class begins.
We talk about Van Gogh's life for about five minutes at the beginning of each class. We briefly mention the end of his life (and quickly move on to how popular and famous his paintings are today).
The reason I include this in my lesson is because I would rather approach the topic with sensitivity than allow it to be blurted out by a student (which often happens).
Supply List
Students will need the following supplies: - Oil pastel set (Pentel and Cray-Pas are my recommended brands-- a set of 25+ can be purchased on Amazon for under $10) - Colored paper/construction paper/tinted drawing paper (paper that is not white), size 8x10" or 9x12" - Pencil & eraser
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I love drawing with pastels-- they are so bright and fun! Out of all of my public school art assignments, the van Gogh-inspired pastel drawings were probably the most consistently popular (and successful). This class is an extension and expansion of those inspiring lessons!
