Class Experience

*** The drawing of the Baby Yoda and landscape will be sent via the 'classroom' prior to class for student to either print out and trace onto their paper/canvas prior to class, or to use as a reference to draw their own version of this scene (The top 1/3 - 1/2 of the paper should be reserved for 'sky'). They can choose the Yoda-in-the-Pod or the silhouette of Yoda for their piece.

We will spend class time learning a little about Van Gogh, viewing a few of his more famous works of art and painting our piece in the style of one of his most iconic pieces: "The Starry Night".

We will paint our basic colors and I will paint along with students and show them how to blend from one color to another. Then we will go back in with a fine-tip brush and add the 'movement' strokes, indicative of Van Gogh's style. I will show students two options for painting Baby Yoda - either as a darker version of his green color or as an all-black silhouette.

**BASIC CLASS NOTES** (Please read)

I begin on time. If a student is late, they will need to jump in and catch up as they are able. I cannot re-start the class for each late arrival. You may request a recording of the class if child arrives late or ends up being unable to attend.

{If a PAINTING class has a drawing or element to print out and trace, please have this done BEFORE the start of class (it will be posted in the classroom several hours before start of class). For these classes, we will not be taking the time to draw that element in class, but will begin with painting our piece, so the student will be woefully behind and unable to get the painting instruction needed if not done before class.  They are welcome to draw their own version of what I post, but need to do so before start of that class as we will begin painting when class begins.}

I encourage creativity and self-expression. Students may veer from what I am doing to find their own 'voice'. Also, I encourage interaction during class (please be polite by sharing talk time and muting when there is background noise in the home). Otherwise, I welcome questions as we go along and open mics.

If your student enjoys this art time and would like to attend my art clubs, please look for these on Outschool or message me for times that might suit better, now that school has begun.

I soooo look forward to seeing your child in class.

Supply List
***Student will be sent the design ahead of time to either trace or use as a reference to draw their own design (see listing above). They should come to class with their design pencilled onto their paper or canvas and ready to paint. (I used Sharpie marker for the towers and landscape portion. If your student will be painting on a canvas, they will need to use black paint). I will send both versions of Baby Yoda. FYI: The all-black silhouette will be faster and easier to complete during the class time,

-Watercolor paper (I use 9x12 size - larger strokes and works up faster), OR a canvas.
-Sharpie fine tip black marker
- Acrylic paint (blues, red/dk pink, yellow, purple, white & black
- paint brushes (1/2" flat and smaller detail brush for painting thin lines)
- water/rag/paper towels (for cleaning brushes)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.

I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.

I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.

I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny

** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
