🥳"This is such a unique and creative class focusing on critical thinking for children who are interested in veterinary science or animal care." Parent 🥳"This class has my daughter hooked after the first session!" Parent 🥳"This is my daughter's favorite class!" Parent I am the co-author, along with my husband, Dr. Ed Blesy, of the popular BE THE VET book series which has sold over 17000 books over the past several years. Using this first person point of view, the books make the child feel as if he or she is part of the story. We will study fictional dog and cat emergency or illness cases to learn about the veterinary profession and veterinary care. Using story clues from the stories that I read aloud each week as they follow along, students will guess what is wrong with the pet. They will get to answer basic questions that a veterinarian will ask like "what is the animal's name," "what are the symptoms or injuries the animal is exhibiting," and "what is the pet's history." This information is all in the story. Then they will use their background knowledge, clues from the story, and conjectures to suggest fictional ways to help the animal which they will compare with Dr. Ed's part which I will share that tells what a real veterinarian would do in these cases. The class is educational and interactive. Students will point out information I read before they make their suggestions. We will review vocabulary and new facts we learned about veterinary medicine from this case. There are many slides used throughout the class. While I will upload the story in the classroom prior to class, I will also read it to them in class before they "become veterinarians." Students do NOT have to buy the book. I will send the stories each week. *All of these cases will end "happily ever after." I wrote the dog and cat fictional stories. Dr. Ed Blesy wrote the veterinary information that I share with the students. *The reading level is upper elementary+. If your child cannot follow along with the story while I read, they can absolutely still participate. I don't force kids to answer if they don't want to. I also try to help struggling learners to know where to highlight symptoms. Also, some students simply listen while I read and respond to the questions afterwards. Of course, many students also LOVE the highlighting part. 🤣 Class Structure: 🐈Greetings 🐕🦺 I read the week's story as students highlight symptoms. 🐈Students answer questions including giving the animal's history from the story clues. 🐕🦺 Students suggest a plan to treat the animal. They are addressed as Dr. We take this seriously. 😺 The higher level questions posed to the children are meant to make them think as a professional in the veterinary field. However, I remind them it is okay to get everything wrong as they haven't gone to veterinary school. No...stress...class. 🐈Students learn what a veterinarian would do for such a case. 🐕🦺 Trivia or facts or videos to support learning end the class. 🤢**Note, sometimes images or x-rays of real cases will be shown to support the content learned. Veterinary medicine can be messy, so keep in mind that there may be an occasional picture shown. ONE OF THE CLASSES, X-RAY 1, shows real images and x-rays for the entire class and supports much of the material learned over the weeks. There will be no story for this week. Students still get to "Be the Vet" as they guess what they are seeing in these REAL cases. This is the only class where real cases are discussed for the entire class period and there is no fictional case. This class is often very popular! 🐈🐕I love teaching this class and have met over 90 cool, kind, intelligent future vets. Try the class yourself if you enjoy pets and veterinary science. I hope you will love class as much as I do! I aspire to make it a fun, stress-free zone! 🐈🐕 Students may enter the class at any point and not miss out on important information! I keep track of the story each student enters the class with, so I will notify you when we start repeating. :-) Please refer to the days below. I will add to the dates as well. This is NOT a comprehensive list. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! There are TWENTY weeks of lessons. The Students may transfer as needed between days if you let me know. Thank you. Week of August 28: Thirsty Week of September 4: Chocolate Week of September 11: Gross Week of September 18: NO CLASS Week of September 25: Mystery Week of October 2: Storm Week of October 9: Attack Week of October 16: Leftovers Week of October 23: Bad Breath Week of October 30: Toxic Week of November 6: Ouch 🐈🐕As with any pet emergency, please see your actual vet as this class is meant to be a fictionalized example of how a vet diagnoses an animal and give the student a chance to pretend to be the vet using context story clues. 🐈🐕
Learning Goals

I am the co-author of the popular book, BE THE VET. The other co-author is my husband, veterinarian Dr. Ed Blesy. Dr. Ed wrote the veterinary information based upon his twenty + years of veterinary experience while explaining veterinary terminology for student understanding. This case and treatment are fictionalized based upon one doctor’s experience. It was important for us to write a book where the readers get to feel as if they are part of the experience using the context clues from my stories. Over 17,000 books in the series have been sold.
I am also a former certified elementary school teacher and the author of over 25 books for children.
