Class Experience

1. Students will find and research a social issue that they are passionate about where they will create a solution to help remediate the issue
2. Students will increase communication skills through a variety of ways such as, but not limited to, peer to peer, professional writing, public speaking and more
3. Students will create a PSA and create a plan for their project
4. Students will present learning and solution to their family and the class
I attend many trainings and workshops around equity, diversity, teaching students of diverse backgrounds, and more as an educator. Being a high school English teacher, I have been trained to facilitate conversations that include heavy topics that can be personal and controversial.
There are worksheets that students will use to plan their project and PSA. Students will be expected to complete those along with research to prepare for the next class.

1. Overview of course + What's My Passion
2. Social Issues in the Community and World
3. How Social Media is Used to Help Social Issues
4.Speaking My Truth- Communication, Rhetorical Triangle, and other literary elements
5. The Plan: How Can We Support this Issue- research, brainstorm, and other ways to discover ways
6. The Plan: Setting Up My Platform- Will it be a blog? Will it be a poster? Will it be a class you teach? + Using My Platform for GOOD
7. The Plan: Sharing My Knowledge- Project PSA
8. Showcase +What's Next

There will be outside research, planning, assignments, prompts, and more that will need to be done outside of the class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Final Project. Students will receive a Silver, Gold, or Platinum certificate of completion. Based on engagement, PSA completion and quality, and research work.

Students will also receive Community Service Certificate for 20 hours from You Soar Learning.
2 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
We will research a few social issues that are not too controversial but students are encouraged to find what they are passionate about and it could be controversial. I do teach high school English and we delve into some controversial topics but as a discussion. I teach how to have a healthy debate using FACTS and STATISTICS as well as personal anecdotes which is a persuasive technique that they will learn about and use that.
We will learn about primary and secondary research as well as reliable and unreliable resources, which means we will use a lot of articles and appropriate websites.
Sites such as Ted Talks, YouTube, Organizational Websites, Governmental Websites and more.
