(Mentor Text used for this session: "When I Was One-and-Twenty" (A.E. Housman) (Please look for other classes in this series that focus on other mentor texts.) This course is based in Bernabei's writing methods. I enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with much discussion. Students should come to this course with basic understanding of the writing process, and a desire to gain positive experience in verbal expression. Students will write poetry inspired by classic and contemporary authors. This is not...
Students will learn to recognize and define text structures, so that they can use them to capture and express their own poetic insights.
I've taught reading and writing to multiple ages for several years, and I also have served as an instructional coach. I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and another master's degree in Educational Leadership. I absolutely love to write and share the joy of writing, and I've taught writing for several years. I understand that writing isn't everyone's cup of tea, so I am beyond happy to share some ways to bring your words to the surface. Oftentimes, it's just a matter of sorting out what's happening in your brain and getting it to come out in the right order. I'm here for you!
There will be no homework, as this is a one-time session. The student may want to make additions, edits, and revisions to his or her poem after our session.
Learners should have paper and pencil in order to create their writing products. They may type and save into a document if they are already comfortable with that process. I'll supply the poem, vocabulary list, and other other needed materials for this class.
Assessment is done informally through our discussions, and also through the poetic product each student creates during the session.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
