Assessment is done informally through our discussions, and also through the poetic product each student creates during the session.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
This course is based in Bernabei's writing methods. I enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with much discussion. Students should come to this course with basic understanding of the writing process, and a desire to gain positive experience in verbal expression. Students will write poetry inspired by classic and contemporary authors. This is not a foundational-level course, so students should be prepared to dig deeper than the basics of poetry. During our sessions, we will ... * have a quick-write designed to give the writer a basis for the poem he or she will create during the session; * share a mentor poem; * analyze the poem (considering its title, various craft points noted by students and teacher); * define the text structure of the poem (chunking the poem by purpose, topic, etc.); * discuss all finds and student perspectives during this process; * and allow individual students to write poems based on their quick-writes and the analysis of the mentor poem. Some of the lessons (mentor poems) included are listed below. * "Draw" (Amy Ludwig) * "A Jelly-Fish" (Marianne Moore) * "I Remember" (Joe Brainard) * "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" (William Wordsworth) * "A Musical" (Paul Lawrence Dunbar) * "Sonnet 43" (Elizabeth Barrett Browning) * "I am Offering This Poem" (Jimmy Santiago Baca) * "At the Lake" (Sarah Anderson) * "Ozymandius" (Percy Bysshe Shelley) Remember, we are all expanding our knowledge together (including the teacher). I'm looking forward to learning with you! Mrs. Rae Marie (M.Ed.) (Writing, Poetry, Fantasy Fiction, ACE Educator)
Learning Goals

PERSONAL EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: The relationship between a teacher and a student must be built upon a foundation of trust. Once trust has been established, the teacher can lead the student to any educational destination.
Hello!
I am so happy to get to know you on Outschool!
My husband (also a teacher) and I have been married for 37 years, and we have two incredible grown sons and an amazing daughter-in-law! Our sons had their own tailor-made mixtures of educational types prior to attending university. Both, at one time or another, experienced homeschool, public school, and private Christian school. Our older son wanted to graduate from a public high school, while our younger son unschooled himself to graduation. We believe that just as every child is unique, so should be each one's personal educational pathway. By the way, my older son, Joel Livsey, teaches French horn and other music-related topics right here on Outschool!
It's been my privilege to teach children from pre-kindergarten through seniors in high school. The subjects I’ve taught include all early-childhood subjects, as well as reading, writing, science, social studies, music (all ages), and choir (all ages). Additionally, I’ve served as a Curriculum and Instructional Coach. You’ll find me teaching many of these and related topics here!
Other points of interest about me are listed below.
• I’ve taught private music lessons (piano, flute, and voice).
• I began a community reading club for children at a local farmers’ market.
• I’m a Teachers Pay Teachers and BOOM Cards author.
• I’m a singer/composer.
• I love to write!
• …and perhaps the coolest thing of all…I have two Poodles (Willoughby James and Frasier)!
Please join me for some fun and memorable learning experiences right here on Outschool. I’m looking forward to it!
