Class Experience

This class will explore a technical design skill called "isometric drawing" which is a great way to showcase some fun and creative room designs.

We'll begin by reviewing examples of vector illustrated room designs and discuss the basics of how to create these with pencil, ruler, and paper, as well as some brief discussions of CAD programs available for design and illustration (no additional software will be needed).

Students will then use simple geometry (angles) and measurement (with rulers in centimeters and inches) to create their own three dimensional grid framework. We will review pattern-based isometric shapes such as buildings and furniture and practice drawing these components on a grid.

In the second class, we will perform calculations on our illustrations to check things like the perimeter of each section, and the area and volume of the room. If time permits, we can discuss a simple budget that could bring our own room design to life!

Students will present their unique room designs in the third class and, if time permits, they will be challenged to use their newly learned isometric drawing skills to create vector illustrations of such things as bunkbeds, lofts and libraries.

*IMPORTANT*: PLEASE READ THE SUPPLY LIST BELOW AND ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ATTEND THIS CLASS WITH THE REQUIRED SUPPLIES. THANKS!!! :-)

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class requires the continuous use of fine motor skills which are generally not sufficiently developed until students are AT LEAST TEN years of age. This class is specifically designed for students from age 10 to 14. Therefore, the minimum required age to register is 10 yrs and the maximum age is 14 yrs. Thank you for respecting the age range of the class.
Supply List
Students should bring unlined paper that is standard/letter sized (8.5 x 11 inches), pencil and eraser for drawing and any type of coloring art supplies they would like to use (pencils, crayons, ink, markers), as well as a 12 inch/30 cm ruler that measures in either inches or centimeters or both. If a student has access to a protractor, it can come in handy in the class but is not required. Angles which cannot be measured can be estimated. The slideshow of the lecture will be provided to all students after the class so that they can continue to review how to use math to draw some interesting interior design.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

With degrees in Math, Music and Education, I have been teaching students for over thirty years.

I teach classes that offer learners a chance to experience the creative side of math by putting theory into practice to design things like dragons, anime characters, castles and more. My classes are activity-based and encourage students to learn through hands-on projects that mimic real life math-in-action done by architects, engineers and designers.
