Class Experience

Can you label every state on a USA map? Spend some time in my United States Geography unit and you will be able to label the states, and draw them too! You'll also come away with a variety of knowledge about each state ranging from state capitals, to sports, to popular cuisine, and even to celebrities and notable people who call each state home.

Over the course of ten classes we're going work our way from east to west and draw our very own map of the U.S.A.

Each class we will start out singing along to a popular song, Fifty Nifty United States. This silly, catchy song will help us commit the names of each state to memory in alphabetical order. The song is catchy enough that it may stay stuck in their heads for the next thirty years!
We will then pull out our projects, and add 5-8 new states to our map while carefully discussing borders and shapes.
We will then discuss some important and interesting facts about each state. These facts will vary greatly as we touch on as many aspects of cultural significance as possible.
Students are invited to prepare short presentations about their home states to share with their classmates in our final class together.

The goal is that at the end of our art project we will have retained the ability to name, and label each state in our country. We will also have gained a round base of knowledge and appreciation for the rich and varied culture across this great nation.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify and label each state by it's geographical position as well as it's shape.
Students will gain knowledge about each state through fun facts, and the discussion of culturally significant foods and events.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm an avid reader, and an author.
I was never so surprised in all my life as when my son told me he "just wasn't into reading" and that he thought "writing was the worst part of school." I had to think quick before he missed out on all the magic that I knew was waiting for him within the pages of books.
And so family book club was born. And then books and friends, and soon my house was overflowing with reluctant readers bouncing up and down and waiting desperately to tell Miss Tammi all their favorite bits from last week's reading.
I have spent ten years coaxing children into eager readers and confident writers. I love to watch those smiles light up when they realize there is a whole hidden world inside of books. In that world they never need to try to fit in, or please other people. In that world they are welcomed, they are wanted, and they are inspired.
