In this class we will be drawing and painting birds found along the Northern East Coast of the USA, ranging from the sweet Eastern Blue Bird, to the Bald Eagle, and everything in between. Class begins with a brief discussion of our featured bird, and an overview of the steps I will be taking to sketch it. Using a step by step process, we will draw and paint it together. A variety of simple techniques will be used, and students will learn how to create a simple and dynamic painting, and how to use watercolor paint to its best advantage. I try to maintain a calm and engaging environment, emphasizing the process of creating art over the end result. I truly believe any one with an interest and willingness to learn can have a great time in this class, however, having a little experience in using watercolor and in drawing would be helpful for getting the most out of this class. If you are interested in this class, but are a complete beginner, feel free to message me about a private session, I would love to help you feel confident and able to create using drawing and watercolor! Materials used will be a watercolor paper, drawing pencil, eraser, black pen, and watercolor paint in a variety of colors, watercolor brushes, paper towels or rags to wipe your brushes on, and a cup of water. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!
My name is Abi. My passion and expertise are in drawing and watercolor painting, but I also dabble in and have taught the basics in a few other mediums, such as acrylic painting, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil.
I’ve been drawing and painting since very early childhood and have always embraced it as a part of who I am, and known it to be valuable resource in my life. A lot of my inspiration comes from the landscapes I grew up with or the feelings the weather or a book inspired in me. I believe that art is an outlet for both processing feelings or events through life, and is an underused tool to develop skills in observation and critical thinking. My teaching style is calm and centered in being a safe space and showing that the creative process can provide joy and peace. Mistakes happen, but its never the end of the world or something to be ashamed of. I'm dedicated to helping people better understand the world around them and to developing relationships to enrich life through art. I believe anyone who is interested and willing to try can become an artist.
I have been an art teacher for four years, and before that had six years of experience in support roles providing supervision and guidance to children within classroom and day-care settings.
In my free time I enjoy being outside, knitting, crocheting and am a big fiction reader. This year I hope to use my sketchbook practice to document my walks, bird sightings, and travels.
