Class Experience

This course is about the impact of the U.S. Presidents on the foreign relationships between the U.S. and other countries. Since the U.S. President sets the tone for all foreign policy decisions, it is important to study and analyze presidential decisions and their political, military, economic, and cultural consequences on the U.S. and the world. Students will learn about various examples of foreign policy such as diplomacy, sanctions, military, intelligence, foreign aid, trade, and environmental policy.

Session I. - William McKinley; Theodore Roosevelt; William H. Taft; Thomas Woodrow Wilson; Warren G. Harding; Calvin Coolidge; Herbert C. Hoover

Session II. - Franklin D. Roosevelt; Harry S. Truman; Dwight D. Eisenhower; John F. Kennedy; Lyndon B. Johnson,

Session III. - Richard M. Nixon; Gerald R. Ford; James E. Carter; Ronald W. Reagan

Session IV. - George H.W. Bush; William J. Clinton; George W. Bush; Barack Obama

Learning Goals

The class has two main goals. One is to provide students with a basic factual knowledge of international relations as influenced by modern U.S. presidents. Just as important, however, is the ability to use this information productively to evaluate, synthesize, or interpret key facts and ideas. Students will learn how to integrate factual data into some basic understanding of how foreign policy choices are made and how they impact the United States and the world.
