Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
This class will explore United States history from the mid 1800’s through current times. No prior knowledge is required, although an understanding of the U.S. prior to and during the Civil War is a plus. As global citizens, I want my learners to be able to interpret information from multiple sources and viewpoints. Instead of merely memorizing names and dates, the emphasis will be on analyzing and discussing history with a focus on cause and effect relationships and long-lasting effects. It is my hope that this class will ignite an interest (or fuel a continued interest) in historic investigation!

In our 50 minute, once-a -week "live" classes, I will provide multiple types of learning opportunities, including story-like "lectures" with visuals, discussions, videos clips, virtual field trips, and other interactive activities such as Kahoot, Nearpod, Quizlet, and YouTube. None of these 3rd party apps require downloading or purchasing anything, and participation with them will be optional.

Course Outline:
Week 1: Introductions, Post Civil War U.S. & Reconstruction
Week 2: The Gilded Age
Week 3: The Progressive Era (Advancements & Challenges)
Week 4: The Progressive Era continued (WWI, Prohibition, & Women’s Suffrage)
Week 5: 1920’s
Week 6: Stock market crash, Great Depression & New Deal
Week 7: WWII
Week 8: Cold War
Week 9: Cold War continued
Week 10: Civil Rights
Week 11:The 1970’s, 1980’s & 1990’s
Week 12: Current Times

*Depending on the number of learners enrolled and their interests, the outline may be adjusted slightly. A positive class culture is a must, so I prefer learners to take turns when participating and to treat each other respectfully.

Most importantly, I want all learners and parents to be 100% happy with the quality of this class. Any concerns, questions, or ideas for improvement should be communicated with me so that adjustments can be made accordingly. Obviously, the more a learner engages with the course content, the more they will get out of the course.

*If interested in this class, but cannot find a section that meets your scheduling needs, please contact me directly to discuss options.

Parental Guidance
The history of the United States course is exciting, interesting, and will undoubtedly include sensitive subjects- as is true of all history when including multiple viewpoints. I will work hard to ensure discussion remains age-appropriate and pro-actively contact parents if any questionable situations occur. Examples of sensitive topics include racism, sexism, elitism, land-theft, European-centric ideals, and immigration controversy. I've taught this class for many years in brick and mortar format and will provide similar judgment and communication regarding issues.
Pre-Requisites
This class is part 3 of the American History classes I offer. Some knowledge of America from 1789-1865 is recommended before taking this class.
Supply List
I will provide all of the materials, including an overview (with optional review and extension activities).
