This is a History writing workshop for students who want to add research and writing into their existing History studies. Since some state homeschool regulations require a specific number of hours or other criteria, parents may be looking to add research and writing time into their student's year. I offer writing prompts and feedback for both US History and World History. This course pairs with my US History, World History I, and World History II courses, however it will also work well for students who are using their own curriculum at home or taking other online History courses. Class meets for only 15 minutes each week because students will do the bulk of their research and writing work outside of class. The first class will simply be a chance for me to meet students and find out what part of history they are studying so that I know what types of prompts to give them throughout the semester. After that each class will be a chance for me to give prompts out, check in with students on their work, give feedback to students, accept finished papers, and more. Students will be responsible for doing research and writing on their own time. Students will be given at least four prompts over the course of the 14-week class. Two of those prompts will be short and quick and require less research. One prompt will be a longer paper and will require a good bit of research but students will be given longer to complete this paper. Our final prompt will be for a research project where students will create and present a short presentation to the rest of the class. All prompts will be specific to the eras of history that the student is studying during that time. Though we only meet for 15 minutes a week, I will be in contact with students throughout the week to return graded papers, offer feedback, answer any questions they have, and more. I will also have office hours during which I am able to meet with students in the Outschool classroom should they need additional help. Due to the time required outside of class to grade student papers, this class might only be offered once throughout the semester. If you cannot make it to that class time, don't worry! I will post the video each week and students who cannot attend the class time can watch the video to receive their paper prompts. I will also be posting all prompts on the classroom wall. Students will receive the same feedback regardless of if they can attend the weekly class or not. **Please note: my main goal is to give students a chance to learn more about the time period, get students used to researching and understand how to answer a prompt, it is not to make sure that their papers are grammatically correct. Therefore, I am giving feedback on the research itself and not the grammar or format. I do require that students show their sources, but I do not require an MLA formatted Works Cited page. I will check for plagiarism, however, and will address that with the student and give them a chance to rewrite the paper in their own words if plagiarism is found.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to research and write several short papers, as well as either a long final paper or final project.

Intro
During the first class I will find out what type of history (US or World) students are interested in and if they have any writing requirements that they need to meet using this class. I will also explain how the class will work. This will be an informal meeting just to get to know the students goals for the class.

Hi everyone! I'm Nicole Trusky, a homeschooling mom of three and lover of all things history and pop culture! I have a Master in Humanities with a concentration in American Studies and have been studying history for as long as I can remember (my Bachelors is in History and Political Science!). I have been homeschooling my own children since 2011 and have been teaching other homeschoolers since 2016.
I had a few wonderful professors who taught History through material culture and a focus on the lived experiences of marginalized groups in American History. This is something I'll be emphasizing in my Outschool courses because learning about the past is not just memorizing names and dates, but learning how people really lived! My history courses focus heavily on the lived experiences of the people of the past. We read lots of primary sources written by the people who lived it and we analyze those sources for bias, credibility, and more. My goal is to teach students to love history and to get into the habit of questioning what they read for reliability.
**Please note:
- All of my classes, especially my US History classes, are inclusive and anti-racist.
-Occasionally, I take time off for holidays or other reasons. These off days will always reflect in the set class dates and are not spur of the moment. However, I don't list off weeks in my class listings since I may have sections that the off days do not apply to. Please check all class section dates to make sure you are ok with the class run time and possible days off
-All listed class times are approximate. Often, I have very eager and quick students who whiz through material. I do not believe in busy work and feel that if students have learned the material, they do not need to be given additional work just to fill time. For this reason, classes may end 3-5 minutes early. I strive to NOT stay late in a class since I know many students are going from one class to the other and I don't want to make them late for their next class.
